Workshop

The Chandler workshop staff has a vast range of experience and practical skills to help you to get the most out of your guitars and equipment. As well as offering set ups and refrets, we can give advice on pickup selection and wiring options to ensure you get the best sound out of your instrument. If it’s custom work you need – from resprays to full instrument building – we can do that too. Our workshop can repair or modify a vast range of amplifiers as well.

Meet Chandler’s workshop technicians…

Brinsley SchwarzThe elder statesman of Chandler’s workshop, Brinsley has had a long and varied career in the rock and roll business.

Starting in 1970 in the eponymous Brinsley Schwarz band with Nick Lowe, Brinsley went on to play guitar with Graham Parker and The Rumour from 1976. He joined the Chandler workshop in 1981 and has been with us ever since.

Specialising in guitar set ups, Brinsley is also an expert in alternative guitar wiring and the modifying of Silverface-era Fender amplifiers – he has written extensively on both topics for Guitar magazine.

Still very much an active guitar player – he’s recently been touring and recording with the reactivated Graham Parker and The Rumour – Brinsley is currently using a 2000 model 1960 Classic reissue Gibson Les Paul gold top loaded with Monty’s Guitar pickups, a heavily modified Fender Vibrolux with a 4x10 cab and a pedal board featuring a Twin Roadrunner overdrive pedal handmade by Brinsley and fellow tech Andy Eales.

Andrew ScrimshawFrom renaissance violins to pre-CBS Stratocasters, Andrew’s knowledge of stringed instruments knows no bounds.

As well as his high levels of practical skill in the workshop, Andrew has travelled widely as a guitar technician with Public Image Limited and has an in-depth understanding of how to keep instruments in tip-top condition while they’re out on the road.

He also has a Higher Diploma from the London College of Furniture in Baroque and Renaissance instrument making, so if you should have a lute in need of repair, Andrew’s just the man for the job.
Andy EalesAndy has been a valued member of our workshop for over five years.

Before joining Chandler he spent three years touring the world as a pro guitar and backline technician, as well as playing in numerous bands.

Andy has spent many years making and modifying effects pedals and, occasionally, applying his technical wizardry to building and customising valve guitar amplifiers.
Ben Skidmore - Ben studied acoustic and electric guitar making at Merton College where he gained an ASET Level 3 in Classical Musical Instrument Technology and established a reputation for creating his own unique brand of contemporary instruments. As well as working part-time at Chandler, Ben is currently studying for a degree in electronic engineering.
Jesse HoffJesse has lived in many different places, both in Europe and the US, making a living partly as a musician and partly as an amp tech.
Coming of age in the 1970s, he has developed a true appreciation of analogue technology, and specifically the complex simplicity of tube amps.

Jesse joined the Chandler’s workshop in 2006 and while most of his time is now taken up running the Lazy J amp company, he dedicates some time each week to continue as our amp tech... keeping it real, he says.
